4 Questions with 900 Pound Gorilla (2009)

900 Pound Gorilla is back on No Lip Vol. 2 with a bad ass song called “Big Fat Limo”. 9PG is a hard-working LAX band that has high-energy punk rock songs and clever sing-along lyrics (for fans of old school Pennywise). John Baker, 9PG’s guitarist/vocalist, took a few minutes and talked with us about the LA music scene and their plans for 2009.
1) Tell us a bit about your song on the No Lip Vol. 2 compilation.
The song we have on the comp is called “Big Fat Limo” As with most songs, different meanings could be derived from it. The Lyrics are a blast to sing and the whole song is fun for the band to play. Without being too specific, the lyrics are about the dreams the singer/performer has of making it and the career he would have and the stars he would interact with, etc… Couple that with the idea of Music as therapy and the frustration of working through the day at a “normal” job and the release of playing with the band at night, and you get the gist of it.
2) How is the music scene doing in your town? What can be done to improve it?
We live in Los Angeles so there are a lot of clubs and a million bands playing. Do I have a legitimate issue with the “Pay to Play” policy that exists at many clubs? You bet I do. At the same time, I understand any good gig is a partnership between the promoter and the bands, and both sides have to promote the hell out of it to make it a good gig.
3) Why did you decide to go with Mohawk Bomb Records on this comp?
We decided to submit a song for this comp after being involved with the first Mohawk Bomb release and respecting Ivan at Mohawk Bomb and the work he puts into it. We played some fun shows out here in California with the first release and got to meet all the West Coast bands.
4) What are your plans for 2009?
Our plans for 2009 are to first work on and finish our second album, which we’re actively doing now. We have about 14-15 songs we’re recording in our home studio and we’ll finish up again at The MIX Room, Burbank. We’re also cutting a video for our song “Roller Derby Girl” right now and we’ll have that song mixed before the album for release. We’d like to release the album as wide as possible, following it up with as many shows as we can play. A 3rd album or EP this year is also an idea we’ve been throwing around. Basically, we spent a couple years putting our studio together and
we’ve got a lot of music we want to get out. We’re looking forward to playing the new songs live and playing for as many people as we can.
