4 Questions with Soulfound

Soulfound has been pounding the Florida pavement since 1999. With their full-on indie-cum-alternative original sound, they have moved over 10,000 CDs, played over 1,000 shows and seen most of the country without the support of a label. Signing with Mohawk Bomb Records in March 2008, Soulfound has been dubbed the “next big national modern rock band” by fans and critics. In 2009, Soulfound recorded “Temper, Temper” exclusively No Lip Vol. 2 before announcing a hiatus to begin in April. In the meantime, you can see Soulfound tearing up stages around Florida and on the Internet. Ivan Pena, CEO of Mohawk Bomb Records and singer/bassist for Soulfound, took some time to chime in on 4 Questions.
1) Tell us a bit about your song on the No Lip Vol. 2 compilation.
“Temper, Temper” was a song we wrote back in 2006 that got cut when we were recording “Is a Rock Band”. We didn’t cut it because we didn’t like it, just because we ran out of money. We love playing this song live and it brings a different dynamic to our set. The song itself is about dealing with rejection at the most personal of levels and realizing that sometimes its not your fault things happen and that people have conflicting agendas. I got burned and I wrote a song about it.
2) How is the music scene doing in your town? What can be done to improve it?
This town is sleeping right now. There are many excellent bands, but not enough support from the people and the venues. There needs to be a music stimulus package in Tampa Bay! We hope Mohawk Bomb Records is that stimulus package. So much talent in this town!
3) Why did you decide to go with Mohawk Bomb Records on this comp?
Because I own it.
4) What are your plans for 2009?
We released “Live at Zen Recording” a few weeks ago, so we will be pushing that for a bit. We are currently shooting a documentary about our last show in Gainesville and plan on taking a break for most of 2009 and work on other projects. We have been going non-stop for the better part of 10 years and I feel like we deserve a break. Disqo and I will be working on some other side projects. Jonathan will be having surgery on his knee and Sam will be finishing up with school and get his Bachelors. We aren’t breaking up and we hope to be back later in 2009 or in early 2010 with a new CD.
