First Mohawk Bomb Records Entry on Grammy Ballot

900 Pound Gorilla’s wickedly rad punk tune “Gutterball” has made the cut onto this year’s Grammy nomination ballot. “Gutterball” was featured on No Lip Vol. 1. This is the first Mohawk Bomb Records artist to make an appearance on a Grammy ballot and we couldn’t be prouder of John, Donat and Jeff. The song is entry #102 (in between Nickelback and Nine Inch Nails) in Field 4 – Rock, Category 16 -  Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocals.

Soulfound “Is a Rock Band” Enters Amazon.com Digital Album Charts

Clearwater, FL – Mohawk Bomb Records artist Soulfound’s new CD, “Is a Rock Band”, has entered the Amazon.com digital album sales charts at #50,688. Although it is not in the high rankings as say Nickelback, Snow Patrol or Jack’s Mannequin, it is the highest position a Soulfound mp3 album has appeared on the digital charts. 2004’s 3-song EP “The Lives Lived So Far” ranks at #68,735. Per Amazon, there are over 200,000 ranked albums and thousands more that are unranked.

“In the top 25th percentile? Not bad for a little band from Tampa Bay, Florida with no major label support,” stated Ivan Pena, vocalist/bassist for Soulfound. “The album is a little different and moodier than our older stuff, but it’s honest. We hope it catches on, despite the tough times.”

Released on September 20, 2008, “Is a Rock Band” is Soulfound’ 2nd full length album and 5th release in 6 years. Their last EP, “For the Sake of Trying” featured their most popular single to date, “Fire!”. The album was produced by Steve Connelly, Jeff Tomei and Brian Merrill with Soulfound.

Venice Beach Rappers Taught Me a Lesson on What Not to Do

Hey! Given how ubiquitous free music is there days, we have decided to start posting free mp3 on the blog in addition to our newsletter. Why? Why not… The ultimate goal is to get these heard, not to squeeze out every dime from your pockets.

When I was in California last week, while walking on Venice Beach, I was accosted by 4 or 5 guys that were “pimping” out their music. They were a ragtag bunch from Atlanta and their wares were burned CD-R with sharpie markings on them. The pitch was simple: 1) ask you to stop and listen, 2) you would listen or ignore them (I listened), 3) they tell you that on this CD-R in their hand there were 18-42 amazing songs that I could buy for whatever you could spare.

First Round of Bands Selected for No Lip Vol. 2

This week, we selected the first round of bands to be included in the upcoming No Lip Vol. 2 compilation. Riding on the success of No Lip Vol. 1, we hope to build upon the network of bloggers, music writers and supporters of independent music that Vol. 1 created. Once the initial roster is finalized (by Nov 15, we hope), we will publish the list. Thanks to everyone that submitted and to Sonicbids for making the process simple for us and for bringing us lots of excellent music.
